Map key "1815" in Imperialism playing the purple nation.

Robin's games[]

Run 1[]

(Under misapprehension about depots linking to non-capital port; see note at end.)

1815[]

Spring 1815 start

Capital on bay three steps north of south-west cape. Cash $10,000 as expected. Start six buildings. Order two Indiamen and second Engineer. Train 4 workers; train one expert (ready to become miner); no more paper, but the productivity gains should make up for possible delay in creating miner; we must remember to create paper ASAP for him. Food 7,2,2 (needing 4,2,1, so we order two immigrants immediately, allowing for Engineer). Prospector checks south-west mountain to see whether we want depot touching it. Engineer starts rail south-east; can stop for woody depot after two steps if nothing in that mountain. Bid for cotton (because 7 more MNs offer just cotton than those that offer just wool), timber, coal, iron. Offer one each of clothing and furniture. Only three MNs offer fibre, timber, and both minerals: Kathay, Pram, and Sindel (all cotton, no wool); Trade Consulates in each. Cash $5,000.

Spring 1815 end
  • Clothing: six bidders; offered by Devron and Kem (4 each) and by us and Deneb, Ordune, Haxaco 1 each).
  • Furniture: four bidders; offered by Kem (4) and by us, Deneb, Haxaco, Ordune (1).
  • Cotton: three bidders; 7 offered (by 3 MNs). Twelt offers us 1 @99 (after the preferred Ordune must have taken 1 and has 1 hold left - presumably taking 0, 1, or 2 other cotton, depending on what it had sold). Buy, ignoring message that says industry needs none, which ignores our factory build! Devron, preferred by Sindel, has 0 holds left, so must have got some cotton but probably leaving at least one for us - we don't want an odd number, but as we have sold something we can't have positive even numbers of two products, and timber is more important. Sindel offers us (its third choice) its 2 - Devron and Ordune must have both declined; they now each have 0 holds left (which is puzzling, because Twelt had no more to offer and neither has taken any from Sindel). We should have no trouble getting 2 timber because there are 30 on offer and the 7 bidders have only 6 free holds among us! So decline Sindel cotton. Wodan offers 2 cotton (having sold 1/3): decline. Note that the order of offering is not the same as the order of listing.
  • Timber: Kessel (which was offering 14) offers 12 @98. No diplomatic points at stake, so we take all we can, i.e. 2. We could have tried any of the others, probably, because the other 6 bidders are now all down to zero holds, having presumably bought wool and/or timber. Pram offered 7, Manx 5, Loke 4; our investment in ships should prove wise, but other GPs will have more space next time too.
  • No MN was offering coal or iron; all of us except Devron wanted coal; all except Ordune wanted iron.
  • Conclusion: Sold 1 Furniture to Zinlu, $888. Buying $295, military $100, net +493, bal 5,493. Credit limit 200.
Summer 1815 start
  • Initial reports: 1 Engineer, 2 Indiamen. No significant news in the Times but it reports our three consulates. Its help menu, incidentally (in case I haven't recorded it elsewhere), is called Introductory Briefing and has five pages: Introductory Message, Getting more help, How to win, Game settings and saving your game, and Taking your turn.
  • Progress: iron in that mountain! So we want a depot next to it and a miner very soon (make paper). Prospector moves to nearby hill.
  • Prices: clothing 882 (and we offer 1 again), furniture 888 (and we withdraw so as to keep 2 for possible immigrants), hardware 954 and arms 940 (both presumably had several bidders but no offers), food 94 (evidence of several offers), little change in materials prices with biggest change steel up to 309, cotton 99, wool 104, timber 98, coal and iron 106, horses steady on 300.
  • New Engineer goes to start river port just north-east of Petralona, which will have wool, horses, 2 grain, 3 fish, and hardwood (with a second hardwood in the adjacent MN if we capture); so we will be using all our freight cars and wasting some grain and meat until we build more cars, which we will have to do as soon as the southern depot's mine starts producing. So look after the steel and make more lumber as soon as we get the paper for the miner. This turn, make 1 clothing, 1 hardware, 1 freight car, leaving 8 idle labor.
  • Diplomacy: We are not yet "Most Favored" with any MN, so we offer "our" 3 5%. Pram has no other consulates. Kathay has them with Deneb, Kem, and Ordune. Sindel has them with Ordune and Zimm. Some have none: Hurshen (our southern border), Issa, Zinlu, Zazi, Loke, Pont.
  • Other GP capitals:
    • Devron on grain farm near S-E corner has 5 grain, 2 fruit, 3 fish
    • Kem on scrub forest on N-E coast has 6 grain, 1 fish, 3 timber - so is probably one of the food-bidders
    • Ordune on river plain has 6 grain, 2 fruit, 3 fish, hill, desert
    • Zimm on desert near north end of west coast has 6 grain, 1 fish, and another desert - Zimm has drawn the short straw and will be bidding for food; it could have chosen a north coast site with 4 grain and 4 fish closer to Essex's fruit and cotton or a site, northwest of the one it chose, with 5 grain, 1 beef, 2 fish
    • Haxaco on grain farm near north-west cape has 5 grain, 2 fruit, 1 fish, one scrub forest, one desert
    • Deneb on grain farm just up from eastern rivermouth has 4 grain, 2 fruit, 1 beef, 3 fish, and a swamp, with hardwood just across the border in Sindel - watch for invasion!
Summer 1815 end
Cash 5,343 - must have done something else? Yes - rail into scrub forest.
  • Clothing: Ordune offered 2, we and Deneb and Haxaco offered 1; 4 bidders; we must have sold one, as we now have $6,224.
  • Cotton: bidders Zimm (2 holds), Kem 8, us 11, Devron 5, Ordune 3, Deneb 2. Offerors Zazi 4 (preferences Ord, Zimm, us, ...), Wodan 3 (pref Zimm, Den, Dev, us, ..); Zazi offers us 2 @102: buy. Now Ordune is down to 2 holds.
  • Timber: We all bid. Sindel offered 9, pref Ord then us. Pram offered 7, pref us first. Zinlu offered 5, pref Hax, Den, us, ... Issa offered 3, pref Zimm, Ord, ... and we were bottom. First offer we get is 8 @102 from Sindel; accept. Pram offers 7 @102. No change in others' hold numbers. Accept all we can, i.e. 1.
  • Offers wrapup: Zinlu offered timber (which was a possiblity but not a certainty?), Idolon offered coal (unexpected, as it was the only offeror with 2 and we were below Kem on the list - but Haz, Zimm, and Kem must have bought lots of timber). Iron: the only offer was 2 from Loke, and we were 4th pref so not expecting any.
  • Conclusion: Sold clothing to Kessel $881. Bt $1,122. Mil $100. Net -$341, bal $5,002. CL $330.

Fall 1815 start
  • Times has nothing useful. Prospector has found coal in hill; send him to isolated north-west coast hill. 1st Engr starts 3rd rail; $4,852. 2nd Engr starts port for wool, horse, timber, 2 grain, 3 fish. $1,852.
  • Industry: make fabric, paper, lumber, hardware. 6 idle labor.
  • Market: Offer 1 clothing 881, 1 hardware 992, 1 food 90, 1 steel 327; bid for cotton 102, timber 98, coal and iron 112.
  • Diplomacy: Kathay favors Deneb, so we match Deneb's 10%. Pram and Sindel favor us. Nobody else does. Wait and see, especially the six that had (and still have) no consulates. But we won't be spending on more soon.
Fall 1815 end
  • Clothing: offerors Deneb, Haxaco, us, 1 each; bidders Idolon, Wodan, Zazi. We sold.
  • Hardware: offerors only us; bidders Kessel, Pram, Manx, Hurshen, Bruhr. We sold.
  • Food: 6 MNs offer 2 each (and maybe the list was longer but we don't see page 2?) No bids! The GPs with no fruit must have bought enough last turn.
  • Steel: We offered 1; no bids.
  • Cotton: Wodan offered 3 (pref Den, us, Ord); Issa offered 2 (pref Den, Ord, us) - but it seems we got none. We have 10 holds, Ord 6, Den 2.
  • Timber: no offers!
  • Coal: Wodan offers 1 (pref Hax, Zimm, Kem, us, ...); Pram offers 2 (we're top); Idolon offers 2 (we're 6th). Hax and Den have only 2 holds left, but others have 5 or more. Accept 2 from Pram. Deneb (bottom of the other pref lists) now has 0 holds! Others unchanged, so maybe they all got enough last turn.
  • Iron: Kathay offered 3 (pref Deneb then us); Zazi offered 2 (we were 5th on list); Loke offered 2 (and we're top). First offer we get is 1 @127 from Kathay. How could Deneb have got any, with no holds before? Maybe offers are not strictly in list order? Buy. Loke offers us 2 @116: buy. Devron down from 8 to 6 holds, must have bought Zazi's 2.
  • Conclusion: no unaccepted offers. Sold clothing to Idolon 881, Hardware to Pram 979 - let's cut their discount/subsidy! Sold 1,860, Bt 601, mil 100, net +1159, bal 3,011. CL 483.

1816[]

Winter 1816 start
  • Times has nothing significant except maybe mention of pump using steam-powered engine. Prospector drawn blank, moves east. 1st Engr starts Depot for 3 timber and later coal and iron. $1,011.
  • Industry: Can't quite afford Miner, so use his paper for upgrading (bal $811) and make 2 more paper, 2 steel, 1 hardware, 1 freight car. 2 idle labor.
  • Market: Offer 1 each of clothing 881 (noting furn now 885), hardware 1031, food 82. Bid for cotton 102 (wool's 105), timber 105, coal and iron 116.
  • Diplomacy: cut out Pram subsidy. Examine other GPs: Devron, Haxaco, and Deneb showing no sign of engineering; Kem, Ordune, and Zimm each have 2 lengths of rail.
  • Status: Projection: we're clear winner; Ord and Zimm are equal bottom; other 4 equal middle. We're bottom in world exports but top or equal in all other tables.
Winter 1816 end

$2,700 - we have made 2 sales.

  • Clothing: only our 1 offered; 6 bidders
  • Hardware: only our 1 offered; 5 bidders
  • Food: 4 MNs each offer 2, we offer 1; again no bids
  • Cotton: Zazi offers 4 (pref Ord, Zimm, us, Dev); Wodan 3 (Zimm, Dev, us, Ord); Pont 1 (Dev, Ord, Zimm, us). We have 10 holds, Dev 7, Zimm 5, Ord 4. No offers to us.
  • Timber: Bruhr offered 14 (pref Ord4, Kem8, Den6, Dev7, Hax6, us10, Zimm5); Kath 1 (we're top); Loke 4 (Dev, Den, Kem... and we're bottom). Kathay offers us its 1 @116: buy. No more offers.
  • Coal: Wodan offers 1 (pref Hax3, Zimm4, Dev2, Ord2, Den2, Kem2, us9). Pram offers 2 (we're top). Idolon offers 2 (pref Hax and we're 6th above Den). Accept 2 from Pram; no other offers.
  • Iron: Kathay offers 3 (pref us7 (2 down), Den2, Ord2, Kem2, Hax3, Dev2, Zimm4); Zazi offers 2 (Den, ... and we're bottom); Loke offers 2 (Dev, Kem, Ord, us, ...); Kessel offers 1 (Zimm, ... and we're 6th). Accept 3 from Kathay; no more offers.
  • Conclusion: Sold Hurshen clothing 925, Kathay hardware 964 (from 1072). Sold 1889, Bt 746, mil 100, net 1043; bal $1,854. CL 623.

Spring 1816 start

  • Diplomacy: still 6 MNs without consulates and Deneb offering Kathay (which prefers us) 10%. But Sindel now prefers Ordune, so we up it to 10% even though it offered nothing last turn.
Spring 1816 end

$3,262 and 9 ships: we've sold our 3 biggies.

  • Clothing: Den, Ord, and Hax were also offering; 6 bidders would have taken all.
  • Furniture: only ours for 4 bidders.
  • Hardware: again only ours for 4 bidders. Our export status should be rising!
  • Food: basically same as last quarter with no bids
  • Cotton: None offered. Bidders us with 9 holds, Zimm, Kem, and Dev with 8, Deneb with 5
  • Timber: Wodan offered 2 (pref Hax 2, Zimm, Dev, Kem, Ord7, us, Den); Pram offered 7 @ 110 and we're top. Accept 4 because we see at least 2 coal and 5 iron coming.

1817-18[]

Winter 1817 start

More iron found; a port will be needed unless we wait to build a depot on one. Explore east. Each engineer builds rail N-E onto orchard, in sight of another one. $2,945.

  • Industry: Expand steel mill. Make 4 lumber, 2 steel, 1 clothing: 0 idle labor. Need immigrant or expert soon.
  • Market: offer 1 food 65; bid for cotton and wool 111, timber 112, iron 121.
  • Diplomacy and status: no significant changes affecting us but we have edged to a definite diplomatic lead. Trade consulate in Zazi (no others; and it's top equal as a cotton producer with loads of hills and mountains) - that should extend our lead and our fibre.
Winter 1817 end
  • Food: only ours and no bids. (What are those fruitless guys doing?)
  • Cotton: (Zimm 7, Kem 8, us 12, Hax 4, Dev 7, Ord 3, Den 7). Bruhr offers 3 (Ord, Kem, Dev, us); Dedge 1 (Ord, Kem, us, Dev). We got no offers; those hold numbers were after cotton.
  • Wool: (holds as above). Hurshen offers 2 (us, Den, Zimm); Zaz 1 (Den, Zimm, us); Pont 1 (us, Den, Zimm). Buy Hursh 2, Pont 1. (Zimm 7, Kem 8, us 9, Hax 4, Dev 7, Ord 3, Den 6).
  • Timber: Sindel offers 9: (us, Ord, ...); Kath 1 (us, Den, ...); Loke 4 (Ord, Zimm, us, ...); Zinlu 5 (Ord, Kem, ... we're 7th); Kess 14 (Zimm, Kem, ... we're 7th). (Sure of 4 iron.) Kathay offers us 1 @ 119: buy. (Zimm 6, Kem 8, us 8, Hax 4, Dev 7, Ord 3, Den 6). Sindel offers us 9 @ 114: buy 4. Loke offers us 2: decline. (Zimm 0, Kem 2, us 4, Hax 3, Dev 2, Ord 2, Den 2). Kessel offers us 4: decline. We could use another merchant ship.
  • Iron: (Zimm 0, Kem i, us 4, Hax 2, Dev 2, Ord 2, Den 0). /Sindel offers 1 (us, ...); Kath offers 3 (us, ...); Hursh 1 (Dev, ... we're 6th); Zaz 2 (Ord, us, ...); Loke 2 (Hax, ... we're 6th); Kessel 1 (Zimm0, Kem1, us, ...). Kathay offers us 3 @ ? - buy. (Zimm 0, Kem 1, us 1, Hax 2, Dev 2, Ord 2, Den 0). Sindel offers us 1 @ 127: buy.
  • Conclusion: Bt 1431, mil 100, net -1531; Bal $ 914. CL 976.

Spring 1817 start

Nothing in north-east mountain; prosp goes S-W. South Engr takes rail east; north engr can't afford depot so waits. Miner done coal, moves to adjacent iron.

  • Transport: start shipping 2 coal but down to 2 meat (10 in warehouse would let immigrant feed for 10 turns).
  • Industry: Expand furniture factory. Make 1 freightcar, 2 lumber, 2 fabric, `1 steel, 1 furniture. With more labor we could produce 2 more lumber, 2 more steel. Save that clothing for immigrant next turn.
  • Market: offer 1 food 64, 1 horse 300; bid for cotton 112, wool 110, coal 124, iron 121, but keep purchases to diplomatic-point minimum.
  • Diplomacy: Cut Kathay to 5%, let Deneb be #1.
  • Status: no marked change.
Spring 1817 end
  • Food: our offer, no bid
  • Cotton: (Zimm 6, Kem 8, us 12, Hax 3, Dev 8, Ord 8, Den 7). Sindel offered 2 (us, Ord. ...); Bruhr 3 (Ord, Kem, us, Zimm, Hax); Twelt 2 (Ord, us, Hax, Zimm, Kem). Sindel offers us 2 @ 113: buy 1. Kem 7, Ord 6. Bruhr offers us 1 @ 113: no. Zimm 5, Ord 5. Twelt ditto. Hax 2.
  • Wool: (Zimm 5, Kem 7, us 11, Hax 2, Dev 8, Ord 5, Den 7). Zz offers 1 (Dev, Ord, Den, us); Wod 3 (Den, Dev, us, Ord); Kess 1 (us, Dev, Ord, Den). Kess offers us 1 @ 110: no.
  • Coal: (Zimm 4, Kem 7, us 11, Hax 1, Dev 2, Ord 5, Den 4). All bid. Sindel offers 2 (us, Ord, ...); Zaz 2 (Dev, Kem, Ord, us, ...); Wod 1 (Hax, Zimm, Kem, us, ...); Pram 2 (us, Ord, ...); Kess 1 (Zimm, Kem, us, ...); Idol 2 (Hax, ... we're 6th). Sindel offers us 2 @ 130: buy 1. Pram 2 @ 124: buy 1.
  • Iron: (Zimm 2, Kem 5, us 9, Hax 1, Dev 2, Ord 3 (no bid), Den 4). Sind offers 1 (us, ...); Kath 3 (us, Den, Kem, ...); Hur 1 (Den, Zimm, Kem, us, Hax, Dev); Zz 2 (us, Den, ...); Loke 2 (Zimm, Dev, Kem, us, ...); Kess 1 (Zimm, Kem, ... we're 6th). Offers to us: Kath 3 @ 126: buy 1. Sind 1: buy. Zz 2 @ 120: buy 1.
  • Horses no bid
  • Conclusion: Bt 744, mil 100, Int (12%) -8, net -852, Bal -$138.

Summer 1817 start

Prosp fails but moves west. South Engr respects financial situation and declines to extend to horses for depot with 2 fruit, 2 grain, 2 swamp. North engr still awaits cash; his depot will be worth much more than the south one (hardwood rather than horses; more grain).

  • Transport: mt up to 3
  • Industry: order immigrant. Make paper, lumber, fabric, steel, furniture, clothing, hardware. Surpluses 7 timber, 6 iron, 5 coal, 1 wool, 1 fabric. Buy nothing except fibre, but bid to keep tabs!
  • Market as before
  • Diplomacy: no MNs have embassies. Attitudes: slightly friendly MNs: we have Pram and Kath; Dev, Kem, Ord and Den have none; Zimm has Kessel; Hax has Wodan (our north-east invasion idea).
  • Other GPs: Dev still no rail, but we see the coal and gold mine at its port. Kem has depot near those south hills. Ord similar. Zimm rail will reach Essex fruit and hardwood next extension. Hax still no rail or port. Deneb rail length 4, will soon have lots of fruit and some grain, meat, and horses.
Summer 1817 end

Fall 1818 start

North engr has done depot, moves to N-W cape. Miner rests. WHY are we not showing production from that new depot connected to a port?

The expert explained: it needs a depot. Either I'm losing my memory or i had never known that. So I'm starting again at that same spring 1815 save.

Run 2[]

1815[]

Following Run 1 as closely as possible until the new knowledge suggests divergence.

Spring 1815 start

Exactly as above. Kathay, Pram, and Sindel consulates.

Spring 1815 end
  • Clothing: four bidders; offered by Devron and Kem (4 each) and by us and Deneb, Ordune, Haxaco 1 each).
  • Furniture: eight bidders; offered by Kem (4) and by us, Deneb, Haxaco, Ordune. Now (Zimm 4, Kem 0, us 2, Hax 2, Dev 0, Ord 2, Den 3).
  • Cotton: Kath2 Iss2 Kes3; we+Kem+Dev+Ord bid. We are not guaranteed timber, so want 2 here. Kath (Consulate!) offers 2@100: buy just 1 so as to get more info (Zimm 4, Kem 0, us 2, Hax 2, Dev 0, Ord 2, Den 3). (Not much more info if any!) Kes offers 2@100: buy 1.
  • Timber: Lo4(ranking Hax>Ord>Zimm>us) Pra7 (ranking Den>Ord>Dev>Hax>us); 7 bids. Not likely we'd have got any.
  • Coal and iron: no offers, as predicted by expert. Six bidders, so maybe nobody has told the AI!
  • Conclusion: sold Wod clo 864, Zaz fur 924; bt 2 for 200; net +1488, bal 6488, CL 358. Remarkable differences from Run 1.
Summer 1815 start

Prospector finds iron and moves next door to hill. New Engineer goes to start river port just north-east of Petralona, as above. Make freightcar #16, fabric, clothing, hardware; 8 idle labor. Save clothing hoping for future price rebound. Offer fur.

  • Diplomacy: We are favored by Kathay, which has no other suitors. Pram has consulates from Kem, Ord, and Hax, while Sindel has one from Zimm, so offer them both 10%. Kessel has timber, cotton, wool, coal, and no consulates, so we give it one.
Summer 1815 end
  • Furniture: Den2 Ord2 Dev3 Hax2 us1 Zimm3(+?); 6 bids; sold 1.
