(Trying the blue nation in Imperialism with map key "Scotland" in October 2014)

Capital in south-east on bare plain with grain farm and 3 fish. (Can't build on the grain farm because the adjoining MN shares the only water and you must have "uncontested" access to water.) Start rail N-E. We have 10 fabric, 8 paper, 24 lumber, 19 steel, 5 clothing, 5 furniture, 20 food. Engineer is the only civilian we can see, so we order a Prospector. Start six buildings. Order 2 Indiamen. Bid for food (for our fruit-eaters), cotton, wool, timber. Offer 1 each of clothing, furniture. Reserving two paper for 2nd Engineer, use remaining paper for training (expert first). Farmer can come later. Consulates to Kessel, Pont, Pram, Sindel.

End of first turn[]

Two sales: Clothing was offered by all (4 from Dev, Hax, Kem; 1 from Den, Ord, Pat, and us; Ido, Iss, Zin, Twe, Kath bidding); Furniture offered by 5 (4 from Dev, 1 from Den, Ord, Pat, and us; Kes, Lok, Pon, Zaz, Ded bidding); we may have sold furniture to Kes or Pon.

So when food is offered we have 2 holds for buying (Kem 4, Pat 2, Hax 4, Dev 0, Ord 2, Den 2). Twe and Wod each offer 2 food to us, the only bidder. Looking at later offers, we see that we will be offered at least 2 wool, so decline food.

Lok (preferring us) offers 4 wool (Kem 1, Pat 2, Hax 0, Dev 0, Ord 2, Den 1: there was only 1 cotton offered, to Hax>Dev>Den>us, assume Hax got it; since then, purchases would have been Kem3, Hax3, Den1; no other bidders but us - maybe the other 3 produce wool; 27 wool were offered, only 7 bought, so there must be 20 left; from the preferences, we see Kem's below us for Sin and Kes, who were each offering 8 and must still have at least 1 each with one having more, so we must get one of those - or both if Den buys from Zaz, Lok, or Iss; and we are guaranteed a timber if we want one- only offer is from Pon: Den(1)>Hax(0)>us.). So we decline Lok's kind offer. Issa offers us 2 (of original 4); no other bidder has any holds left (so they've probably bought Issa's first two); looking better: decline. Sindel offers 4: buy 1; Kessel offers 8: buy 1. The other offeror was Zaz 3.

Conclusion: Sold clothing (873) to Zin, furniture (897) to Pont. So diplomatic points with Sin, Kes, Pon. Wool cost 96, so +1478, bal 7678, CL 357.

Summer 1815[]

Hey, we did have a Prospector; now we have two; plenty of hills for them to try! Food down to 18, as expected - two of our six people want fruit; only one wants meat, so we balance out but risk sickness. Start 1 fabric. Offers and bids as before.

Diplomacy screen: Mil Good, Ind Awesome. Most Favored Trading Partner with just Pon and Sin. Kes prefers Pat (its only other consulate). Pram prefers Dev despite having no consulate there but consulates with Pat and Kem. OK, should offer 10% for all except Pont, which has no other consulate; but we forgot.

MNs with NO consulate: Wod, Ido, Manx, Zaz, Lok. Numbers of consulates: us 4, Kem 4, Pat 2, Hax 0, Dev 4, Ord 2, Den 4.

End of turn

Loke offers 2 food (us 10, Kem 8, Pat 5, Hax 5, Dev 5, Ord 5, Den 4); guaranteed 2 timber and 8 wool with possibly more of each, so decline; Patagon offers 4: buy 1. Kes offers 8 wool (us 9, Kem 2, Pat 4, Hax 5, Dev 3, Ord 3, Den 3); gamble, buy 5; (us 4, Kem 2, Pat 4, Hax 4, Dev 3, Ord 3, Den 3) Ded offers 5: reject; (us 4, Kem 2, Pat 4, Hax 2, Dev 3, Ord 3, Den 3) Hur offers 5: reject; (us 4, Kem 2, Pat 4, Hax 2, Dev 3, Ord 3, Den 3) Wod offers 7; reject. Sin (Den>us) offers 1 timber: buy. (us 3, Kem 2, Pat 4, Hax 2, Dev 3, Ord 3, Den 2) Pont offers 2: buy.

Sold clothing to Pont 889, Furn to Idol 861. +780, bal 8358, CL 496. Now do those 10% jobs. Kes and Sin favor us but Pram favors Pat.

Fall 1815[]

Process more stuff. Expand clothing factory to 2. Switch bid from cotton to coal.

Patagon offered 4 food; 3 MNs offered 2 each. Buy 3 from Pat. We're the only bidder for wool; Sin8, Zaz3, Man6; buy 1 from each. Timber: Pont offers us its 2: buy 2. Other was Issa offering 1, not to us; 7 bidders. Pram 1 coal (after preferred Pat had taken 2): buy. Idol 3 coal (originally 10; we were #5): buy 1. Bt 10, filling all holds.

Conclusion: sold Clothing Sin 790(878), Furn Kes 811(902). Food 92, wool 86 (or 94), timb 113, coal 113 (or 124). net +496, bal 8754, CL 606.

Winter 1816[]

Pause Engineer after 3 lengths to see where we want depot(s) for minerals if any. All workers busy. Offer clothing(878), hardware(1001), not furn(902). Switch from coal(113) to iron(113). We are favored by Kes, Pon, Sin; still not Pram; stay with 10% except Sin to 5% (same as Deneb).

MNs with NO consulate: Wod, Ido, Manx, Zaz, Lok, as before. Numbers of consulates: us 4, Kem 4, Pat 2, Hax 0, Dev 4, Ord 2, Den 4, as before.

Kes offers 2 food (us 10, Kem 7, Pat 6, Hax 8, Dev 8, Ord 6, Den 8) (Zaz2, Wod2, Kes2, Ido2, Pat4, no other bidders): no guarantee of anything else, so buy 1; Pat offers 4: buy 4; decline others. Twe offers us 3 wool, of original 9; (Hur5, Zin2, both preferring Kem; only Kem and Hax bidding - (us 5, Kem 3, Pat 6, Hax 2, Dev 8, Ord 6, Den 6): still no guarantee of timber or iron but reserve 2, so buy 3. Hur offers 3: no. There were only 4 tim offered (Ded1, Pram2, Iss1), none to us, with 7 bidders. (us 2, Kem 0, Pat 0, Hax 0, Dev 0, Ord 0, Den 3) Lok (Dev>us) offers 5 iron (Kath7, Zaz5, Lok5; Zimm not bidding): buy 2.

Conclusion: sold clo Kes 821 (913), hardw Pram 915 (1051); Bt 10 (and Zaz offered us iron). Net +743, bal +9497, CL 722.

Spring 1816[]

We can afford more consulates, to get more priority: offer Ido and Lok. Offer Pram 25% to see if we can finally shake Pat off. Expand textile mill to 4; idle labor 2/12; 4 clothing(913), 2 furniture(929), 1 hardware(1051), 21 food(87), 8 meat. Offer 1 clo, 1 Hardw; switch bid from food to coal. No minerals west of timber, so start depot where we are, for 2 grain + timber (one of each expandable).

Status

We are #1, followed by Kem, Den, Hax, Dev. Top exclusively or equal in all respects.

End turn

We want 3 wool, 3 timber, and equal amts of coal and iron. (us 10, Kem 7, Pat 2, Hax 8, Dev 5, Ord 4, Den 7) and we are guaranteed 3 coal, maybe no timber or iron; Pont offers 5 wool @84 (Bru3, Hur5): buy 5. (us 5, Kem 4, Pat 2, Hax 5, Dev 5, Ord 4, Den 7) Bru offers 3: no. No tim for us and no guarantee of iron. Pram offers 3 coal @141 (Wod6, Pram3, Ido10): buy 3. (us 2, Kem 4, Pat 1, Hax 4, Dev 3, Ord 4, Den 6) still no sure iron. Wod offers 4 @113: buy 1. Ido offers 7: buy 1.

Conclusion: Sold clo Zin 931, hdw Zaz 1082; bt 10 for 1069; net 844, bal 5341, CL 851. Zaz (6th place!) and Lok (3rd place) would have offered us iron.

Summer 1816[]

Times says Patagon short on Food; no surprise - did they have a death wish? Ido favors us; Lok still favors Ord, so give it 5%. Sin favors Deneb, so give it 10%. Idle labor 2 (because of coal imbalance). Offer 1 clo, fur, hdw; switch bid from coal to food.

End turn

(us 9, Kem 8, Pat 6, Hax 8, Dev 8, Ord 5, Den 7) we sold 3 of the 5 goods! Pont offers 2 food (Hur2): buy 2. Merchant Marine holds: (us 16, Kem 8, Pat 10, Hax 12, Dev 8, Ord 8, Den 8).

MNs
Subsidy percentages: Wod 0, Kes 10, Ido 0, Pon 0, Man 0, Pra 5, Lok 5, Sin 10.
Note in Spring 1823: We want more timber: consider courting Pram with 25% or consulates in Iss (Dev+Kem+Ord), Ded (Kem), Kath (Kem+Den), or Bru (Den). All are neutral with one or more of their consular GPs. Ord gives Iss 10% but all others are 5%. In and since Summer 1821 they offered: Pra4, Bru7, Kath14, Ded2, Iss7. So try Kath next time we have $500 and push it to 10% the following turn.

Each of the 16 has coal, iron, and wool.

Only five have more iron than coal: may be worth selecting

Only 3 cotton, all in 3rd or 4th place, and they have no timber; may be worth later consulates if nobody else interested.

Only 7 timber (with Sindel probably having most); there will be stiff competition for these, and we should be in there. Four have wool as #1; two have iron, one has coal.

Sindel, Kessel, Pont, Pram could be a good first-turn batch, for timber and a variety of top products with medium-to-low chance of early invasion.
